The Master of My Own Undoing

When someone you're interested in says they are soon to go away for a long time, one of the proper responses would be:
"Wow, so soon? What a shame, we've hardly gotten to talk with each other. Here's my phonenumber/e-mail."
Unfortunately, that's not what I said.

I'm going to nitpick here.
First off; NEVER EVER give a phone number to a chick and expect her to call. 99% of the time they won't bother. If they ask for your number, sure, by all means, give it to them but STILL don't expect to hear from here.

Here is how the situation SHOULD have gone down.

Her: Yeah, so I'm leaving in a few days. Going to Bangkok.

You: Really? So soon? That's a shame. We had just started to get to know each other. Hey, here is an idea; how about if we go for a coffee or something after we finish up this Japanese thing today?

Her: Sure, I'd love too.

Of course there is always the chance that she isn't really interested. In which case the ending would have been something like this:

You: Really that soon? How about we go for coffee later?

Her: Didn't you hear me? I'm going to bang cock!

...in which case you could have been a bit cheeky and said:
"Well, I have one of those"

BUT congrats on talking to the chick anyway! Good job! You have to start somewhere. Baby steps dude, baby steps...and by that I don't mean anything pedophilistic or anything...

Yes, that may be the way that things *should* be done, but there are many things that I do in ways other than the proper way. The way you described is way too committal for me; I'm aiming first to get to know people in a non-threatening, non-pushy way. If that doesn't work, then so be it.

I don't really care about learning to pick up chicks like a "pick-up master". If I did then I would have studied the guides the way you did.

I don't want to say that girls like to be pushed a little...

I want to say that I wish all good things, and very much love, for Jacob-san!
