New Excite Email Sucks

I don't usually do this, but I really need to blow off some steam.

I remember I got a notice about the new Excite Email some time ago, offering loads of things, though having just gotten acquainted with Gmail, the only thing I noticed was the 1GB storage. So it was with horror that I logged on to my email account on the big day of the switch only to find a bloated, non-intuitive piece of big, stinking, interweb faeces!

Gone was the clean, easy HTML, replaced by yet another failed attempt to make a web-based service look more like a desktop application. Logging in, I wasn't shown the email page, but instead a portal with 90% empty space because of all features that I don't need that I hadn't taken use of. And in a small, small box in the top-right corner, I could, after waiting for the whole behemoth to load, see that I had "New emails (wait for it while it loads...) 0". (That's right, it still says "new emails" even though you don't have any.)

Opening the email treats you to another little loading screen, after which you're free to read your email. Too bad that the default behaviour has been changed, so where before simply clicking on the email opened it, now it merely displays it in a tiny preview below the inbox. If you want it in a window of reasonable size, you have to double-click it. Pardon me, but I was under the impression that double-clicking was generally reserved for desktop applications and internet links required only one click.

And that's just for reading. Want to flag a message as spam? Choose "Junk" from the "Flag as" menu, two clicks where previously it only took one click.

But the most odd addition is that of a contextual menu. Accessed in the regular way, by the secondary button on the mouse, it displays a load of redundant options, the most mind-boggling of which is "Read", which does nothing at all, as it doesn't open any new window with the message, and it is already displayed in the preview window once the mail is clicked on. This is all of course if you can actually see the contextual menu, since the designers seem to have completely missed the possibility of browsers having their own contextual menues also accessible via the secondary mouse-button.

All in all, it is a complete mess, and the main decider for me switching to Gmail as my main account. If only there was a way to migrate all of the mail on Excite to Gmail, but with no batch-forwarding, it would take excruciatingly long, so I fear I must keep it around for the time being.

Edit: I'm not sure if it will have any effect, but here's the link to the feedback page that was mentioned in the mail from Excite about the new system if you want to try contact them via that. If they would only add the option of a "classic" GUI then I'd be satisfied myself.

Also, a comment tipped about the feedback system they have for Excite. "Give specific examples of what needs to be fixed. Don't rant, and keep your response polite and professional."

i completely agree with you..most of the time i cant even get the program to load in safari or firefox....it just says loading...6%.

i wonder if the brains at excite or going to get it fixed...i cant imagine anyone staying with it other than like you said..because people have that email address to get hold of you.

Whoever the idiot was at Excite Mail whom authorized the recent "upgrade", he should be drawn and quartered. Slow to load, slow to respond, with no way to grab the full header (to ID the Spammers behind all the junk mail), the new application is terrible. And there is no way to give feedback on the abomination to the Excite administrators. Goodbye, Excite, hello ANYONE ELSE!

Agreed completely - hit your site after Googling "new excite email sucks" because my mind was boggled at just how bad it is. Thank god it's not my primary e-mail, but I do use it a bit. Gack!

Kurly said...

The new excite interface is total garbage. Now after a dozen years of using excite mail I have to go through all the trouble of switching my email now because of this 'upgrade.'

You had a good run excite but all good things must come to an end.

Wow, I've used excite email for 8 years. In just 2 weeks the crap the new I/F has put me through is enough. I'm switching all my email to my google mail. Enough.

Anonymous said...

I am in accordance with everyone else. My excite email was the very first one I got in and around 1997-1998. I used it mainly for anything I thought was dodgy as its spam filters I thought were very good in comparison to anyone that had a hotmail address at the time. Now its very slow to load, often emails suddenly disappear on the screen just as you clicked to open it. I hate the preview bit as its tiny and even on maximum expansion you would be lucky to see more than a line of text at a time. I hate the separate pop up window so that you can actually read the email as every time I have to maximise it. I hate all the useless calendar function etc that I dont want that take up most of the page and leave the email functions which is really the main function as a second class citizen. I hate...., Please Excite, change it back, the background has gone from black to white in the last week, so maybe you are changing things!

Just to mention that comments here aren't just a vocal minority; checking the sitemeter, about 90% of the visitors in the last few days have come across the site searching for "excite email sucks" or variations of it.

I'm not sure if it will have any effect, but here's the link to the feedback page that was mentioned in the mail from Excite about the new system. If they would only add the option of a "classic" GUI then I'd be satisfied myself.

I keep getting this message. After 4 minutes of loading :P

"Your e-mail cannot be retrieved from the server. Check your internet connection and try again."

The crazy thing is I have high speed internet with no current interuptions. I'd like Excite to take responsibility and admit it is their problem.

I agree that the new Excite Email is unbelievably bad. You'd think they would have looked at the new Yahoo! Mail, or Google Mail, and seen what a good user interface and performance level are before they jumped into bed with their new Email partner!

There IS a way to provide feedback to Excite...in the top right corner of the Excite window, click the link to Help. At the top of the Help popup window is a banner ad from Excite that says, "We need your help. Click Here!" Clicking takes you to a marketing survey being conducted for Excite by "NetPromoter Customer Loyalty Program." It begins with two questions:
1) How likely is it that you would recommend excite.com to a friend or
colleague?
A dropdown list lets you choose your response, ranging from "10-Extremely likely" to "0-Not at all likely." Choose "0".
2) What one thing could excite.com do to earn a higher rating?

In your answer to Q2, tell 'em to fix Email. Give specific examples of what needs to be fixed. Don't rant, and keep your response polite and professional.

Since Excite is paying for this "Customer Loyalty" survey, hopefully they will listen to what people are saying and respond appropriately. If not, after more
than 10 years of using Excite Email, it's "Bye Bye" for me.

There is nothing good about Excite's new Blue Tie email. Does anyone know an easy way to have all the email I have there to be redirected to my Gmail address?

Terrible. Just terrible. Excruciatingly bad. Someone at Excite is CRAZAY. How could anyone in their right mind have allowed this?

Anonymous said...

omg so very very awful. like many here, been a reliable email for 10+ years, but now? wow. Craptacular, much?

Where can we send an old email addy to be respooled for a new user? I am so gone.

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with everything said here. I had excite as my main email address for at least eight years, but life is too short to deal with it like it is now. It's very slow, and not at all user-friendly. I spent a little time this p.m. changing my email address in my profiles on various accounts and forwarding everything in my folders that I wanted to save.

Thanks for the contact information. I doubt they'll care, but thanks anyway.

So glad other people noticed. Not only do I hate the way it looks, it crashes my internet explorer and is loaded with spyware.

What choice do we have. We can move to Gmail, the trouble with that is it's owned by BIG brother Goog. If you look at the logo at gmail under it it says beta. Googlepages is beta too and now Goog is going to shut down Googlepages, putting thousands of websites out of bussiness (mine included) Right now there is a petition for Google to not do this, if you will sign it go to --> http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/googlepagesalive

Thought I was the only one to be completely boggled by this "Upgrade"........Its completely user NON friendly........something that new products are supposed to shine at.

Guess someone at excite thought they needed to compete with all the other high storage email systems out there.

Excite.......you've really screwed up my email address!!!!!

Anonymous said...

You are lucky -- Excite decided my 10 year old account had not been accessed in 60 days and DEACTIVATED IT! Yeah, the one I was in just two days ago. I can't even get to my address book to copy stuff out. A complete and pathetic clusterf**K.

Anonymous said...

I check my email everyday and today it came up deactivated because of use. I been there since the late 90's. I find this bogus and I will try to transfer my important contacts but this is definately bad. Suck is too good a word for them.

mandy said...

I too am furious. First I lost all of my contacts. All of them. Now I get the "your account is deactivated" comment. impressive since I used it this morning. The worse part is there is nobody to complain to. No way to fix it. damn I am pissed.

Anonymous said...

I check my excite email at least twice a day and last night I got the "your account had not been used in 90 days so it has been deactivated" message - what the heck is that all about??? I cant even get into it at all now. It wont reactivate and they just sent "canned" questions that have nothing to do with the problem when you email them!! Help

Anonymous said...

Yeah I got the same deactivation message as the last poster. I used it all day yesterday but by 6pm, it would not let me back in. It still recognizes me on My Excite, so I'm tempted to believe this is a short term problem, but it is highly infuriating. I think most agree the new interface sucks, and this is totally unacceptable. I may migrate to Gmail, something I didn't want to do but see no other choice now.

Timothy said...

Same problem here. I was in the middle of an important thread, with e-mails going back and forth, when I left my computer for an hour, came back, and was told that I had been deactivated. It's infuriating. I was in the middle of planning for my wife's baby shower tomorrow, and now I've lost all the communications. I guess I'm to blame, since I trusted that Excite would allow me access to my e-mails (I've been with them since the dawn of the internet, and have never had a problem before).

I sent a feedback when the new interface started (for me, a couple of months ago) and I received a curt reply that there was nothing I could do, that Excite was moving forward. I guess they'll be moving forward without me.

Sky said...

Has anyone figured out what is going on with the deactivated messages? I am super annoyed - this must be a glitch that we can get around, right? I too cannot find anyway to contact them besides their "feedback" email which directly says they probably won't respond.

Anonymous said...

Same problems here. I have two excite accounts. One I can log into but hangs in loading the inbox (been that way for a month now). The other one works as of yesterday, but now says de-activated. I just hope I can log back in so I can move everything once and for all.

Anonymous said...

8th August 2008. Lucky for some, but for some reason Excite decided I hadn't used my 10 years account for 90 days (?) and deactivated it!!!

Excite certainly know how to get rid of users.

Anonymous said...

It's even worse: I wanted to log in today and my account has been suspended for alleged 90-day non activity. Well, I use it on a daily basis. What a bunch of jerks! Everything I had is gone for somebody stupidity. Bye, Bye Excite! Been with you for 12 years. Never again.

Anonymous said...

I hate it, please bring back the old interface (the extra storage is ok though!)

Anonymous said...

Ok, Excite, the joke's over; it was nice of you to let your kid's 3rd grade class re-design the email service as a class project, but now it's time for a responsible adult to take over...that is, if you can tear yourself away from advising IndyMac and General Motors on how to be successful.....

Anonymous said...

Wow... I got here googling "new excite email sucks". Looks like most other people did too! They must be TRYING to lose customers: that's the only reason they would adopt such a poor interface. Uses up so many resources, I can't even leave the window open! And its SO buggy! Deleting SPAM is a pain, but at least now they've added a delete button. I hate it and as soon as I have the time, I'll switch over to my old yahoo mail...

Garrett W Vance said...

Thanks for posting this on your blog, you are still #1 on Google search for "New Excite Sucks." :-)

I've had Excite accounts for over ten years, and have always been pleased. Now I find myself dismayed to find the new 'upgrade' unusable and annoying, as I see so many THOUSANDS others have.

I think it may be some kind of insurance/bankruptcy scam Excite is running because I can't otherwise account for their hell-bent lust for failure.

I really didn't want to, but I find now I MUST move all my important contacts, both business and personal, OFF Excite to my Gmail accounts. So far so good Google, I hope you are paying attention here on how NEVER do things. LOL

And now I find, after extensive testing, that Excite is BLOCKING Google Invites! Not only that, they are blocking all regular test emails from my Google accounts as well. Pathetic and sad, I have never before seen a corporate ji-satsu on the net before. Surely someone is losing their job over this somewhere in what passes for their organization!? I bet this goes down in history along with 'New Coke' and 'Waterworld'. I mean way down deep! What an incredible failure!

And, Excite is making it clear that they perversely NOT listening to their user's pleas and cajoles, tough luck, this joke is here to stay!

Really, if they at least put the damn message selection check boxes back, I might still use Excite for stuff I don't really care about, like logging into sites that require you to be a member even though I just want to look around. :-D

So, changing all my stuff to Gmail is a hassle, but far better than giving Excite's clunky applications ANY more time to load than I have since the day they ruined Excite email.

I probably wouldn't have posted this, but I did it because Excite is blocking Google!!!!

Garrett W Vance said...

I felt I should follow up my comment of yesterday by saying that some twelve hours later the Gmail invite I sent to my Excite account has arrived- late, but it's there. So, I was wrong about Excite blocking Gmail- however, Excite still sucks!

Anonymous said...

The new interface needs some fixing up, to be sure... but its the slowness of the application, the usability problems and delay in receiving email and even loading pages. They need to switch back immediately.

And am I the only person that noticed that when they switched from dark to light that they didnt fix the logo transparency for weeks.

If anyone above an intern designed the IA for this thing I'd be amazed.

Anonymous said...

I don't use Excite e-mail, but I can imagine how dysfunctional it must be. Even their home page, which I have used for a long time to read news, look at the weather, and read comics, has practically ceased to function. For a week the weather report has said that we're having "light snow" when, in fact, the temperatures are in the 90s. I found this blog while trying unsuccessfully to find a way to contact them. I guess they don't want to hear about it when their site doesn't work right.

I'm going to be a lazy guy and paste a previous comment elsewhere, but first, thanks for the survey link. It was hard to stay civil, but I suggested they provide a "classic" view soon so I don't cancel, as my comment below suggests:
I think the answer is simple. Cancel your accounts. I’m about to. I’ve used Excite for, I don’t know, 10, 15 years? Can we all say “SLOOOOOW”? Can’t load in emails to read quickly, can’t find a “select all” choice to delete more than a few emails at a time, their “Help” doesn’t. I don’t have enough life left to spend wading through their new crap so I use it only for junk stuff and never even log onto it any more. Can’t find a contact method but, clearly, they don’t give a crap. Must be a write-off for the owners. If I can figure out how, I’m cancelling. Sorry for you Premium guys. I need a “junk” service. Signed up for Fastmail but it’s soggy, too, altho not as totally hostile. Yahoo screwed up their face about the same time but, giving a damn, they allow you to keep the “classic”, or old face. I use them a lot and will continue to.

I just sent the following message to http://newfb.iwon.com/feedback.jsp?key=excitebt

Me:

How long must this go on?

I became an Excite member in 2002 because I found I couldn't rely on Hotmail. You were

BETTER! You were good to me for many years and I told my friends about your simple, reliable

service. The others were flashier, and slower and less reliable. And now, so are you. Slow.

Unreliable. Unintuitive. How could you?

Aren't you listening to the thousands, maybe millions of unhappy Excite members out there?

Your "upgrade" has caused a lot of unnecessary inconvenience and upset to busy people who

relied on your (formerly) good service. Do you care? Your automated replies saying that the

awful 'upgrade' is here to stay show me that you really don't. All I see is corporate minus

conscience, what a shame to see that from an internet pioneer like Excite. Sell outs.

I really don't want to leave excite permanently but if a change doesn't come soon, if you

don't FIX your MISTAKE, I will. The really laughably named 'Upgrade' is slow, ugly and

unusable. You know it, please for God's sake DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

I feel angry and betrayed, but most of all heartbroken at watching you grasp defeat from the

jaws of victory. You were so good. Not anymore.

Later, Excite email.

Garrett aka Merdance

PS: Although it would be wonderful, I don't expect to receive any meaningful reply from you

because apparently you have been replaced with really poorly designed robots. Surprise me!

Say something meaningful to a long time member you have turned your back on. hehe, and maybe

pigs will fly.

Hello David,

Ever since you guys converted to Web mail, it went from "bad" to "worse". Retrieving/Read/Reply new email is so

from My Folders is worse, it takes forever. Can't you guys do something about it? I'm Enterprise Messaging Manager

I've used Excite email since I was on the tech support team for the 'old days' at Excite@home. I've been nothing but loyal to this email service since then, but now the new interface: Too slow/buggy/counterintuitive. It's more tied in to your system like a desktop app(Java based I believe) but simply deleting emails takes several minutes, where as the old system you could highlight and delete whole batches if need be. CTRL+arrow down does NOT work like blue-tie says. Plus I have friends that use Yahoo, no matter what I do to set the spam filtering or inform excite/blue-tie about the bounce-back error problems their still rejected. Very sorry to say, Excite, I'm now forced to migrate to gmail.

There used to be a checkbox column beside each e-mail so you could delete e-mail without previewing them. This is a very important security feature of which the designer of is apparently ignorant. This piece-of-s**t must have been written in India.

Although you can now minimize the preview window does this mean the e-mail is not being previewed or simply that you can't see it displayed?

Whomever designed this new application and whomever at excite selected it are both idiots.

I then checked and excite supposedly spam blocks email from some auto email responses, and some of the email when they transfred it over doesn't even say who it is from, just the body of the email, oh yea, and the other problems that everyone else is having.

Someone did the math and worked out they werent making money off free acounts anymore, and rather than just close up shop, they're bleeding us for a bit of ad revenue before we leave.

I too feel exactly as you all do. I've been with excite for 10 yrs. But since bluetie's takeover this new interface is absolutely horrible.

It sucks, no doubt.

So how are people moving to Gmail? I can't get the fetch mail to work with excite. Any thoughts?

Rather than have gmail fetch mail (which requires a premium account) set Excite to forward email to Gmail. Just remember to login every 90 days. After a while, let it lapse once you are fully transitioned.

Oh, forgot to post how to do so. The way to forward email is to create a message filter (Preferences/Email/Message Filters)

Create one with the logic of

IF TO {yourexcitemail.com} FORWARD to {yourgmail.com}

Excite really needs to pull its finger out and hire more competant staff. It started out really well back in the 90's and was up there with the likes of Yahoo!, MSN, AOL and Google in relation to providing free email accounts. I don't access my email all that often largely because I don't use it for too many things at present, but I really do hope that the people at the company read this blog and listen to the people who are supporting them. Unless they take steps to rectify the problems they will be out of business within the next five years.

Been using excite email since 2001.
With the changes you're talking about, it's now definitely the worst thing on the internet.

I agree about Excite email. I have a perfectly good computer with plenty of memory and performance, yet when I use IE, which is obviously what they want you to use, because my Firefox doesn't work with it, it still is intermittent in its performance. Sometimes, it only will display "inline" other times it pops up separately. I am about to dump this email account because it is not worth the hassle. When will the people of Excite do something to fix it or who can we get ahold of to tell them we are leaving en masse?

EXCITE email STILL SUCKS!!!

I haven't been able to access the account June 29th, 30th, July 1st, 2009...

This is inexcusable in the internet age. The ONLY reason I haven't left completely is because I haven't fully educated people on my new address at Yahoo. Which by the way is a pretty good alternative if you use Yahoo's "classic" email mode.

I hope Excite loses everyone after this major outage. They deserve it.

I would try your forwarding idea if I could log into the darned thing. I received a canned reply that they know something is wrong, and will try to correct it "as soon as possible." Really big help, that.

My test messages appear not to have landed there, and may be lost, just like all the other mail I am not receiving due to their mess-up. I have received some error messages, indicating some complaints have bounced, as well, but at least one did get through, prompting their response mentioned above. What a horrendous mess they have propagated. The truth is, they deserve it, and we don't. Just wish I had not set up all those email reply messages, to go to my excite account. Crap. Oh, sorry, that's redundant, since I just said "excite account."

what's wrong with this excite mail! No access since June 29. I have been too patient with them. This is the last straw!!!

below is my letter to excite regarding the June 2009 outage (still in effect 6/29-7/1 present)

diplaced excite users please consider rallying with me by compiling the list of advertisers who buy space on excite and instruct them to boycott excite until excite fixes (hopefully reverts back to their original) email system.

I know now to change email providers, but I can't access my address book to even extract my contacts...

LETTER TO EXCITE:
--------------

do you people have any sense at all? I have been unable to access my email for 2+ days now (TUE 6/29/09 through present). nor have you bothered to place any sort of explanation/warning to the outage on the sign in page so we don't repeatedly waste our time trying to login - I had to go to the FAQ page and insert my dilemma only to discover I am not alone in this email outage.

I'm really not a profane, impatient, complaining, intimidating lunkhead - but I am at my wits end here. you "upgraded" which by all accounts has turned out to be a downgrade, degrade, no grade as far as userability is concerned. if one can't access their email, let alone get into their email account to get to their address book to let people know they are having issues because YOU are having issues, what is the point of email? WE CAN'T EMAIL!!!!! DO YOU GET IT?!!! YOU ARE AN EMAIL PROVIDER! YOU ARE NOT PROVIDING EMAIL! if you want us to go elsewhere, then by all means TELL US! profanely or otherwise.

I am unemployed/laid off for 16+ months, and trying to get work with email being the primary conduit. it's not a matter of "apologizing for any inconvenience" as stated in the FAQ section - you are costing me a livelihood! yet, those responsible for choosing this ill-fated "upgrade" and the company you have outsourced it to, are happily employed and go on about their day. please consider hiring me to be your ineffective staff member. or simply take my advice: return to the original system - put your fear aside and just do it already. NO ONE IS HAPPY.

in the meantime, I will compile a list of your advertisers and rally the displaced excite users to petition those companies into cancelling their accounts with you.

if you even read this or care to respond, remember, my excite account doesn't work, so try my backup email at XXXX@XXX.NET. should be interesting to see if you are even reading this.....
I wish you the same that you have put me through since the upgrade - no more, no less. let's see how you cope...

This last idea to rally together and collect a list of their advertisers is a very good one. Count me in. I suggest that we point the advertisers to our own new email providers, with the explanation that we, and many others, no longer feel we can trust Excite to provide efficient (or even functional) service, and have bailed out, left, vamoosed!

I tried the message filters idea, and the problem has either affected this feature's functionality, or (perhaps more likely) Excite has disabled it to keep us from easily ending our relationship. I don't care how hard they make this transition, I am a HISTORY LESSON for Excite.

I am sure the initial contract precludes this, but has anyone considered legal counsel on the failure to provide service, the failure to provide maintenance, the failure to uphold their end of the deal? Class, speak up now. Can anyone spell Class Action?

Yeah... it just kicked me out and gave me the Deactivated Account text WHILE I WAS READING MY EMAIL!!!

The worst "upgrade" in the history of the internet. I've used Excite for so damned long that moving away is hard to do. But it is going to happen due to their idiocy. Buh bye.

Anonymous said...

And I just moved to Gmail.... Hated to do it, but Excite just sucks ass. Why, why, why did you have to ruin a good thing, Excite? You are a member of the internet hall of shame with this. Eat balls.
